Colophon

A colophon is: An inscription placed usually at the end of a book, giving facts about its publication. *

I have to admit, this wasn’t my idea - I actually saw it first on BinaryBonsai and thought it was a much nicer way of say “About”. The intention of this section is to basically give a bit more detail about me, this site and some of the stuff I use to make this site look and behave the way it does - pretty much like the colophon of a book.

About Me

My name is Colin Seymour and I was delivered to Helen and Paul, in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 20 January 1979, by a great big african stork. Ok, the truth, about 27 years ago, part of me (the Y chromosome part) won my very first race, all 3 inches of it. It was a tough race as the odds were heavily stacked against me - probably in the region of about 80 million to 1, but I did it. After winning that race, I spent about 9 months in this nice cosy cabin causing all sorts of havoc and decided enough was enough on my birthday and went for a walk - well more of a stumble at that time.

In the years that followed, I did a bit of schooling - 7 years at Bordeaux Primary School, 5 years at Ferndale High School - went to University for a while and headed off to greener pastures.

As I’m so bad at maintaining my sites, I’ve directed them all to this one. It doesn’t help with the search ratings, but I’m working on this.

I’m a true hardcore techie and accordingly, I don’t run Windows. As a result, I develop my site to look good in Firefox and Safari. This is because I have easy access to these two browsers on Solaris/Linux/Mac OS X, and more importantly, because Firefox is Standards Compliant. If you spot any problems when viewing with Internet Explorer, please take a screenshot and contact me. I’ll try my best to correct things, but I can’t guarentee it’ll be in a timely manner.

As we live in a world of software patents, copyrights and a general “sue for the sake of suing” culture, I’m looking out for #1. Everything on this site, unless otherwise stated, is covered by a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike License.

Standards

I try my best to ensure that my site is as standards compliant as possible. Unfortunately, that does mean sometimes things look horrible on browsers that do no comply with the required standards (Internet Explorer mainly), but I try to code round these when I find such a problem.

At the moment, I validate my page to the following standards:

Valid XHTML 1.1       Valid CSS!

If I get time and the inclination, I may look into updating my site to comply with the new American “Section 508″ and “WCAG 1.0 Priority 1,2,3″ standards, but as I’m not a US bod, I’m not putting too much effort into it just yet. If the UK gov comes up with a similar standard, I may be persuaded.
