Zakumi: The World Cup 2010 Official Mascot

Ladies and gentleman, may I present to you Zakumi: the official mascot for the FIFA 2010 Football World Cup in South Africa.

Zakumi is a Proudly South African (and African) leopard in the green and gold of Bafana Bafana with green hair. The green hair was a decision he made once as “he felt it would [...]

Fans Now Have Say in Running Football Club

This is pretty amazing. Ebbsfleet United FC will become the first football club to be taken over by a fan website. MyFootballClub has agreed a deal in principle to purchase a controlling stake in Ebbsfleet United FC.
MyFootballClub members will have an equal say in team selection, player transfers and the general running of the [...]

  • → I thought this was brilliant, and quite apt when I heard Lawrence Dallaglio mention this on Top Gear last night: Rugby players in the Guinness Premiership refer to the Barclays Premier Football League as the Andrex Premier League - it’s soft and unnecessarily expensive. Brilliant!!! ( 0 )

Painting the Town Red - Literally

You’ve got to love the Greeks for their initiative. Apparently the Greek police will be using paintball guns as part of their arsenal to control the 50 000 AC Milan and Liverpool fans at tomorrow night’s Champion’s League final in Athens.
Of course, they’ll only use them to control the mob if a riot breaks [...]

What a Waste of Money

The time has come… Carlos Alberto Parreira touched down in Johannesburg this morning to start his life as the most highly paid person in the South African public eye.
I was absolutely amazed and shocked to hear Carlos Alberto Parreira will be coaching Bafana Bafana in preparation of the 2010 World Cup. I admire him [...]

Stop Watching the Adverts

Whooops, seems Robinson was so busy watching the Borat adverts on the side boards, during Englands 2-0 defeat to Croatia, that he didn’t quite manage to make contact with the ball so nicely passed back by Gary Neville…

Gary Neville’s first goal for England, and it was in the back of his own net. Ha ha [...]

Brazilian Names

Whilst watching the Brazil vs Japan game the other evening, I noticed that a lot of the players’ names end in “inho” and wondered is this was like “Kip” in Kenyan names (I believe Kip means “son of”).
Well, as luck would have it, I found an explanation for this…
Most Brazilian players are known professionally by [...]

World Cup Fever

I can’t say I’m the biggest fan of football these days (I don’t support any particular team), but I do still like the international game. There is no better time for some good international football than during the World Cup, though it would be better if Bafana Bafana were playing. Oh well, at [...]

  • → The 2010 World Cup stadiums in South Africa were announced today. 5 current ones are going to be upgraded 3 others are going to be completely flattened and rebuilt, and 2 new stadiums are going to be built. Sounds like a lot of work to do in 4 years, but I’m sure they’ll all be complete. The only other important thing to do by then is teach Bafana Bafana how score goals. Yup, just concentrate on scoring goals, the wins will follow. FYI, SA didn’t qualify for this year’s World Cup and didn’t even score a single goal in the African Cup of Nations. ( 2 )
